Lumikko’s locomotive HVAC solutions can be adapted to existing rolling stock – whether the need is to replace or modernise an ageing HVAC system, or to introduce air conditioning to a locomotive that was not originally equipped with it.

Proven HVAC technology for existing locomotives
Locomotives can remain in service for decades, while the technology inside them evolves. An ageing HVAC system may become increasingly difficult to maintain, or an older locomotive may have no air conditioning at all.
Lumikko provides proven HVAC solutions that can be integrated into existing locomotives and adapted to the requirements of the fleet. Depending on the project, the scope can range from adding air conditioning to a previously unconditioned driver cabin to replacing an ageing HVAC unit or modernising the wider climate control system.
Available installation space, electrical and control interfaces, air distribution and maintenance access are taken into account when adapting the solution to the fleet.
Energy efficient climate control
Energy efficiency is considered throughout the system design. Demand-controlled ventilation adjusts airflow based on measured CO₂ levels, helping maintain good cabin conditions without using unnecessary energy. Combined with high-efficiency components and optimised system control, this reduces energy consumption while maintaining reliable heating, cooling and ventilation.
Lumikko can supply either an individual HVAC unit or a complete system including performance calculations, 3D design, air ducts, controls and pressure protection. The solution is designed together with the customer to support reliable operation and a long service life.
Designed around your existing fleet
A retrofit project rarely starts from a blank sheet. Existing fleet structures, installation space, electrical systems, controls and air ducts all set requirements for the HVAC solution.
Lumikko combines proven HVAC technology with project-specific engineering to adapt the solution to the existing locomotive. We can support the project flexibly from the initial assessment and engineering to manufacturing, implementation support and lifecycle services.
