Regenerative braking system
The Regenerative Braking System can be seamlessly integrated into Lumikko’s HVAC solutions, enabling energy that would otherwise be wasted during braking to be recovered and reused for heating.
By integrating Regenerative Braking System with HVAC technology, energy can be used more efficiently, reducing overall energy consumption and making rail operations more sustainable.
Lumikko’s Regenerative Braking System already in use in urban rail transport operated by Pääkaupunkiseudun Kaupunkiliikenne Oy in the Helsinki metropolitan area and in Tampere.
“According to calculations, one tram in Tampere uses approximately 120,000 kWh of energy for heating each year. Around 74,000 kWh of braking energy is generated annually. This suggests that the braking energy produced by a single tram could be used to heat an average of four large electric-heated houses for a year,” says Ville Saikkonen, Lumikko’s Technology and Product Development Director.
